Today me and my gang and I watched a cat eat a bird or something. It wasn’t a big deal or anything, you know? Just what gangs do and stuff, I think. I saw it on the walk back from school, my whole gang did. One of the fourth-grade gangs was there too. But they didn’t really know what was going on or anything. Us fifth graders did though. You got to be a certain kind of smart to know about the food chain and animals and stuff. So yeah, there was this neighborhood cat and he must have been really hungry or something because he had caught this little baby bird and started eating it but it wasn’t cooked or anything and didn’t look very good to eat. I wouldn’t want to eat that even if I was really hungry. Charlie thought it was a robin but I don’t think Charlie knows a lot about birds. My dad is a veterinarian so I would probably know more about birds than him. I told him I don’t think it was a robin. Either way it didn’t look very tasty. There were lots of bones and the cat sometimes spat them out while it was trying to eat it. After a few minutes of watching the cat eat I told my gang we should head over to the baseball diamond and see if any of the older kids were playing a game. We walked over and saw some of the grocery store workers sitting on the bleachers drinking sodas or something. We are not supposed to go near them so we went back into the neighborhood and walked past the cat again. The bird was all gone. He must have eaten it all. I’m glad I don’t have to eat bird like that for dinner. My mom is a very good cook, so that is nice. Then my gang and me walked down to the creek behind Dawn’s house (she’s the only girl in the gang) and threw rocks into the water until we got bored of that. It started to get dark so I told my gang goodnight and we all went to our houses. When I got home I told my older brother about the cat and he said that he saw it too on his walk back from his school. My mom told us not to talk about dead cats at the dinner table. Even though she is a good cook she can be very boring sometimes. I don’t think she knows what it is like to be in a gang. Tomorrow I think the gang and I will walk down to the library and use their computers or something. One time there was a kid who got in trouble for looking up bad pictures on them so sometimes I get worried that I’ll get in trouble too but we usually just play games on them. My bicycle broke down a few days ago but I wish I could ride it down to the library instead of walking. I walk a little bit slow but I tell my gang to slow down or else and they do so that’s okay. Charlie’s dad is a mechanic and said that he can help me fix my bike but my dad says that my bike is too small and Santa might bring me a big kid bike for Christmas this year. That would be nice but not everyone in my gang has a bike so maybe that wouldn’t be so nice. But what do I care about them anyways? After dinner I went to bed and heard my older brother talking to his girlfriend on the phone from the bunk above me. I think he thought I was asleep because he said a lot of bad words. I won’t tell on him though. I hope I don’t dream about the cat and the bird. I really did not like the sound the bones made when he crunched them.
