FACES
Not knowing how to drive is nice because I don’t have to look at the road ahead and can instead look out at the people walking and make faces at them as we pass.
I usually make mean faces—scary ones. I like the idea that a person walking to or from a place might look at our van as we pass and see a mean, scary, blur of a face that they can’t shake and think about for days or weeks or years and see in their dreams and in dark corners of their rooms. I do this because I like the idea.
I don’t always make mean faces. Every now and then I make a confused face, like I am very deep in thought about something or other. And then if people see me they might think about what I’m thinking about and I like that idea too.
But if I ever see someone I know, like a friend from school, I make no face at all and I hide.
Sometimes I make sad faces. Very sad ones. These faces I make when I see a person (or people) who look sad themselves. Maybe seeing someone who is more sad, even if only for a second, might make them less sad. I do this for them.
But usually, I make mean, scary faces.
